Interview with WICKED's Curt Hansen on Broadway

Curt Hansen as Fiyero.

Some of Curt Hansen’s credits include Charlie in first National Tour of Kinky Boots, Gabe in the first National Tour of Next to Normal, and Dak Zevon in the television series Big Time Rush. Currently, Hansen can be found playing Fiyero in Wicked at the Gershwin Theater on Broadway.

Q: How long has theatre been a part of your life? A: I first discovered theatre in 6th grade, when I was on stage crew for Annie Jr. I saw what the people on stage were doing and I thought, “I wanna do THAT!”

Q: Do you have any pre-show rituals or special warmups?

A: I like to do breathing exercises to ground me—sometimes I meditate—sometimes I use a personal steamer—and sometimes I don’t do any of those things! But when I don’t, I feel pretty out of body while on stage. 😯

Q: How do you take care of your voice and yourself while doing a show?

A: Just basic care and attention that lends itself into a healthy lifestyle. Sleep, rest, but also a positive attitude about life. This is so you don’t spiral into a negative place, which keeps your BRAIN healthy too.

Q: How would you describe the character of Fiyero?

A: I think Fiyero is misunderstood. He embraces what is projected onto him, but he actually is deeper than that. He cares and he’s “street smart”, and he loves to dance. :-P

Q: What have you learned from getting to play him?

A: I’ve learned confidence from him. I wish I was more like him in everyday life. However, since Fiyero entered my life in 2013, I have gained tremendous confidence, and playing the part has helped shape me into the man I am today.

Q: What is it like being in such a spectacular production?

A: It’s pretty wild. Just the amount of people who see the show every week alone is awesome. Not to mention, everyone in the world knows what Wicked is.

Q: What advice do you have for aspiring performers?

A: Stay strong and don’t sacrifice yourself for the sake of a job, or a part. At the end of the day, we are human beings, and nothing in the world is worth losing yourself over.
