What is it like getting to play one of the most iconic and vocally demanding roles in musical-theatre history? I interviewed Amy Manford from London's The Phantom of the Opera to find out.

Q: What was your reaction when you found out you were cast as Christine? A: Well... I still hadn’t heard anything until the very next evening after the final audition and thought I hadn’t gotten the role. I was pretty upset so I decided to make pancakes with all the toppings. When the first pancake was poured on the pan, I got the call. I was so excited I left everything on the stove and went straight out for a drink with my friend. I came home that evening to a very black pancake. 😂
Q: Do you have any special vocal warm-ups or pre-show rituals? A: I almost always warm up in the shower at home before coming into work. Your voice sounds the best in a bathroom and the steam helps as well. I also do this revolutionary vocal exercise called ‘EGG’. One day if I film myself warming up I’ll explain it to you all... (don’t worry, I won’t film that one in the shower haha)
Q: What’s your favorite costume you get to wear in the show? A: Ah I love them all! If I had to pick one it would be the blue managers dress with the cape. The dress fits so beautifully and the cape allows some major dramatic tossing moments in the show (I often get in trouble for being too ‘extra’ with my cape tosses)

Q: What’s your favorite song you get to sing in the show? A: My favorite song to sing is Think of Me because having the orchestra join in after the first section is honestly the most incredibly feeling- it is like I am flying! I also love singing the section before wishing with the solo violin. I have played the violin since the age of 4 so it has a special place in my heart!
Q: How long has theatre been apart of your life? A: I can’t remember when it wasn’t! I have always had a passion to perform in front of people. This started off with Dance and Rhythmic Gymnastics and I start singing Opera throughout high school...And now I’m in musical-theatre! I don’t think theatre could ever stop being apart of my life...even if I just end up performing to my cats everyday. 😅
Q: What is it like getting to play this iconic role? A: I think it is obvious to say that playing Christine is an absolute dream. It is a pleasure to play a character that has so many different layers to be brought out. The score is just gorgeous and of course the costumes are indescribably beautiful! It has also been amazing meeting so many Phantom fans and young aspiring Christine’s. Everything associated with the role gives me so much joy and I am very lucky!

Q: What advice do you have for aspiring performers? A: I’ll do this in dot points as I believe this has helped me:
-Surround yourself with loving supportive people who believe in you. -Don’t compare your development or accomplishments to others. Everyone goes at different paces and everyone has different winding paths in life. -Walk into every audition thinking the words “they are going to love me”. -Don’t ask, don’t get ... take responsibility for your own career, don’t wait for some else to start it for you! -Surprise People! 🌟
